Faithful to historical events, the series follows the six decisive weeks of the Turkish struggle for national independence, from 16 March to 23 April 1920.
It is 16 March 1920, exactly a hundred years ago. The sound of occupying soldiers’ boots breaks the silence of deserted streets. Indian and British soldiers climb out of their trucks and enter a police station, where clashes erupt with heavy loss of life.
When news of the occupation reaches the Istanbul Telegraph Centre, morale is at its lowest. Yet on this exceptionally difficult day, resolve and determination are essential. The centre manages to contact Ankara and receives instructions for its mission. But the occupying forces’ intrusion into the building makes the situation even more critical.
While these events unfold in Istanbul, Ankara is on alert. The occupying forces’ actions in the Ottoman capital prompt Mustafa Kemal and his companions in Ankara to take a range of measures.
The occupying forces’ closure of Istanbul’s Chamber of Deputies strengthens the plan to establish a new assembly in Ankara. Deputies in Istanbul attempt to reach Ankara under extremely difficult conditions.
The occupation of Istanbul also causes deep concern among the public. Patriots begin searching for ways to save their homeland.
Faced with the occupation, Topkapılı Mehmet, Hüsamettin Bey, Ethem Pehlivan, Galip, Halide Edip and countless unnamed heroes have only one thought:
“Independence or death.”
